Tomorrow is my first race!
How I cannot believe this day is nearly here. 12 hours from now, I will have completed my race.
I believe strongly in the power of goal setting, and with the help of Runner’s World, I came up with a few goals that I think are realistic and will keep my morale up.
1. Finish the race. Not only do I think this is realistically attainable, but I think it will be an enjoyable experience, regardless of time. I’ve been having allergy issues this week and am having to face the reality that I might have to take it easy and not meet my other goals. My asthma flares up with any kind of illness, and I don’t want to have trouble breathing for obvious reasons.
2. Finish in 2’30”. I’ve been hesitant to give myself a time goal because I don’t want to set myself up to feel defeated if I don’t meet it, but I think this is possible. This puts my pace between 11 and 12 minutes, which is a pace I’ve been able to achieve even with short walk breaks. Given my breathing, I probably will be taking some walk breaks.
3. Finish without walk breaks (other than to grab water, of course). I don’t know if this will happen, but maybe I will surprise myself. Maybe I’ll feel a lot better in the morning.
My overall goal is just to run the race at an overall enjoyable pace. I plan to start off really slow to accomplish this. When I did my 11 mile run, this worked out well and I remember feeling pretty great the last mile or so, even quickening my pace. So, I guess well see how it goes. Wish me luck! Now, off to bed!
